Tim Newell is a Senior Advisor to the US Renewables Group, a California-based private equity firm that is among the largest investment firms in the U.S. focused exclusively on renewable energy. Now investing its third fund, USRG is currently managing a portfolio of investments to deploy production technologies and infrastructure in biofuels, solar thermal, geothermal, biomass, and waste-to-energy projects.

Mr. Newell began his career in the public sector, serving in a number of positions in the U.S. government. In the Clinton Administration, Tim principally served as Deputy Director for Policy in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, where among his responsibilities he was Co-Director of the National Environmental Technology Initiative, a multi-agency effort aimed at improving U.S. research and development and commercial deployment of clean technologies. Before being appointed to the White House staff, Mr. Newell served for six years as a Congressional staff member, including successively as Legislative Assistant, Legislative Director, and Washington Staff Director for then-U.S. Representative Norman Mineta representing California’s Silicon Valley.

Mr. Newell’s investment career prior to joining USRG has mirrored his work in government, As a principal investor, he served as a founding Managing Director for DFJ Element, a clean technology affiliate fund of global venture capital firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson. As an investment banker, he led an investment banking group focused on the intersection of technology and regulated industries for Robertson Stephens; served on the founding management team as head of investment banking for E*Offering, an online investment banking venture launched in partnership with E*Trade and successfully sold in 2000; and was head of the Clean Technology Strategy Group for Merriman Curhan Ford. He is also a founder of the New Resource Bank, the first U.S. commercial bank formed to finance sustainable companies, industries, and technologies.

Mr. Newell’s current and previous board roles include Fulcrum Bioenergy (Board of Directors) Fat Spaniel Technologies (Board of Directors), the California Clean Energy Fund (Board of Directors), the CalCEF Angel Fund (Advisory Board), New Resource Bank (Advisory Board), and In-Q-Tel (Business Advisory Board). He is a graduate of Brown University.
